How Not To Be A Tourist
If you visit any place that is not your hometown, then you are a tourist. Even an invading army will be tourists at some point - I have traveled to many countries on business, but when I have finished meetings, I enjoy exploring the local places as a tourist. It is impossible to go to a different country for the first time, probably with only a few words of the language, and then wish only to go to places which are not “touristy” - by definition, simply you going there will make them a tourist place. Every year more people visit France than live in France. Add to this all the French people who usually take their vacations in France anyway and it is likely that at any time you are going to see more tourists than local residents. So asking for an itinerary which is not touristy means you are likely to be visiting a place that no one ever wants to go to in the first place, which seems pretty pointless. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a tourist, yet I find some people seem to be ashamed of being thought of as tourists and try to only go to “authentic” villages with no tourists. Well, there ain’t no such place in France. Tourism is the single largest industry in France and as such, it is invisible to the French people. The French know that France is the best country in the world, this is proven to them by all the people who come to visit every year. So trying not to be a tourist will completely baffle a French person who will assume that you have some criminal reason for trying to be what you are not.t |
