French Bookshos and Amazon

Each morning, being able to walk to the boulangerie and home again putting the bread still warm on the breakfast table is one of the key points about choosing a house that I recommend for home seekers in France - this morning the bread was so hot that I had to hold it wrapped in my copy of the Sunday Times. Warm French bread with Marmite, a mug of coffee and Jeremy Clarkeson, life does not get much better.

My new community and social network project is taking shape now, I have chosen the logo and I am still thinking about the main trading name. It is going to be a big project establishing a new community and the “branding” is very imporant - I am toying with using the name www.Nizas.com and there are a lot of good reasons for using this, but I keep registering new ideas, todays brainwave is www.PortableSoup.com - it has the advantage of being real words and an association with travel (in the 19th century for sailors). I would respect your opinion and any comments please.

I got a personal email from Jeff Bezos today - well it said it was from him - in French too - it seems the Amazon France is being fined a thousand euro a day because they sell books cheaper and more efficiently than the French bookshops- like bread, the price of books is regulated in France and Amazon, with their free postage, are taking an unfair advantage and the poor French booksellers are up-in-arms and making the horrid foreign Amazon people pay a penalty - I like bookshops and I like Amazon.com.

I guess if I had to choose one or the other I would choose Amazon, but why should I have to choose and why should I be forced to pay more, who gets to keep the fine anyway, it could go towards Sarko’s wedding present I suppose.

France has a tradition of freedom of publishing, Ulysses was first published in Paris when it was banned for many years in most other countries, typos and all, by “Shakespear and Company” - but now publishing is Internet based and Amazon is shifting the goalposts with its Kindle - if Amazon offer a service to writers and then publishes them as well, then I may reply to Jeff Besoz and support his petition to save him money
